What is this for?

I've had my sewing machine for about 12 years now. This button has been missing for about 8 of them.

Hmm, looks like your top numbers 1-5 are for your stitch length. The bottom ones look like maybe some needle positions?

Mysteries! :)

I have absolutely no idea but it almost looks like the bottom ones will make a buttonhole when used in order. Like, set it on #1 to get one side, then #2 to get the bottom of it, then #3 for the other side, then #4 to finish it off. It seems kind of strange because it should all be one setting on your machine, not something you have to turn to get, but it is an older machine so there's no telling. I would agree with Jeni that the top looks like stitch length, or tension maybe. What kind of machine is it? Maybe google will tell us!

I think that's the turbo boost. You've got your foot flat to the floor, you think you can't go any faster and BOOM! you press that button and weeeeeeeee you get an extra 1,999 stitches per second .... but caution, it uses A LOT of extra petrol so don't use when gas is more than $3 per gallon!

... or it might be the ejector seet button for when you need to get out of the sewing room in a hurry ...
