I love to do something while I'm watching TV at night. My husband has a really mentally and physically tough job, so when he gets home he sort of just wants to watch some TV. And I...well, I just like to watch TV. But idle hands, you know how that goes. So if there is a project that I can do start to finish in front of the TV? I'm in.
I've been practicing my hand quilting on little squares, and I decided that making them into little fun coasters would be an ideal end use. I found THIS amazing tutorial, at Penny's Hands, on making a coaster with no binding. If you follow her steps as far as the binding goes, you are set. THIS tutorial, at Flossy Tea Cakes, is also a wonderful tutorial, except shone on a square, which I guess is more relevant to my project.
Okay, so confession time, I guess. I didn't measure or anything. So. These are estimates. The top square was about 4.5" square. The batting is also 4.5" square. The "backing", which is also the binding, was about 6" square? I guess. Here's what to do. Lay down the big square, print side down. Lay the batting on top, centered and the top fabric on top, print side up. Pin as much as you like (I used 5 pins, one in each corner, one in the middle), and start quilting. I didn't worry about knots showing, because the binding would cover it. So as soon as you've quilted the whole thing, as much or as little as you'd like to quilt, start your binding. Follow those above tutorials for instructions! And there you go!
